Name: Dr. David Sandstrom

Physical description: David is approximately 5'10" and is of medium to slender build with dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. Typically clean-shaven and well-dressed, he usually only lets his appearance get away from him when he gets depressed or stressed out over work. Lately, however, his appearance is rather ragged and unkempt due to the deep depression he's fallen into after his lab, MONBac, was hit by a bomb, injuring and fatally wounding several of his co-workers and friends.

Job: David was a practicing scientist, specializing in microbiology with a heavy focus on infectious diseases. As the chief scientist for MONBac (Miranda-Oublie-Nanashi Biotechnology Advisory Commission) he focused on making sure those on Miranda, Oublie and Nanashi with means in which to alter science did so without harming the public at large. However, after his lab was bombed (an event which David believes was a deep government conspiracy), he's gone AWOL, determined to get to the truth of what happened.

Wealth: Coming from what some would consider 'old money,' David has never really wanted for anything, including a prime education at New Tokyo University where he studied molecular biology and genetics. His job afforded him a rather high position and pay, but most of his living still came from the large inheritance he received after the death of his father a few months ago and his mother a year prior to that.

Living Situation: His home is a two-bedroom apartment in New Tokyo, but he's rarely there anymore, constantly on the run to find the truth.

Background Information

David was born thirty-seven years ago on Miranda to Lydia and Toumas Sandstrom. An only child, he showed a particular scientific brilliance at a young age and his parents -- especially his mother -- encouraged and supported this early on by enrolling him in the best schools and paying his tuition at New Tokyo University. In order to survive school, however, David was an expert at hiding his genius and got on well with his fellow students. While never the most popular kid exactly, he had a small, close group of friends. However, his attendance at University pretty much cut those ties and his workaholic nature limited his social encounters to those he worked with on a daily basis and those he met out in the field.

While working on his graduate degree at New Tokyo University, he started his first lab where he met and (reluctantly) hired Bob Melnikov. The two have been inseparable colleagues ever since and there isn't a person alive that David trusts half as much as he does Bob.

His work at MONBac has been his passion for the past two years, often overshadowing his personal life, though there's never been much of one there to speak of. He was briefly married to a woman named Sarah, with whom he fathered a daughter, Lilith. However, Lilith and her mother now live on Oublie and he rarely sees either of them, a situation that David rarely regrets. In addition to Dr. Melnikov, David's closest friends are all members of MONBac - Dr. Mayko Tran, Dr. Carlos Serrano, Caroline Morrison and Dr. Jill Langston, most especially. However, in the bomb blast, nearly all of these friends suffered. Caroline Morrison was killed, Dr. Tran lost half of her left leg and Dr. Melnikov was made nearly completely blind. In addition, Dr. Langstom (with whom David had a physical and perhaps one-sided emotional relationship) received such trauma from the event that she took indefinite leave from MONBac and David's not heard from her since.

David, himself, hardly received a scratch.

The weeks following the blast were a whirl, mostly consisting of hospital visits, funerals and mass confusion. In addition to the chaos at work, David had to deal with the deteriorating health of his father at home. It was really his father's death (which was an apparent suicide that David will not admit to blaming himself for) that was the last straw, making him snap and run from work, determined to get behind the truth that seemingly ruined his life.

Personality

Those who first meet David would typically label him an asshole right off the bat. They wouldn't be wrong. Cynical, blunt and very vocal about his opinions, David has a tendency to say just exactly what's on his mind with absolutely no attention to diplomacy. He's especially suspicious of people in positions of power, specifically government officials and peacekeepers. That said, those who study science and do it well, those who think unlike he does, but do so with good intentions, often earn his deep respect.

On the surface, he can almost be a caricature: the mad scientist barking orders left and right, eyes wild with a new idea or new theory, springing to action, often leaping to conclusions and taking risks that could get him killed. He's quick to make snide comments, quick to start arguments and call out stupidity and corruption where he sees it, but underneath all this is a very deep, very distinct desire to do good. He was passionate about his work, passionate about the protection of science and people, and this passion has since been transferred to finding out the truth behind what happened at his lab. He is driven, he is determined and he is, above all, extremely pissed off.
